Sustainability and Climate change at Holgate

The sustainability and climate change strategy for education states: “By 2025, all education settings will have nominated a sustainability lead and put in place a climate action plan”. This includes early years settings, schools, multi-academy trusts, colleges, and universities.

At Holgate, we have 3 sustainability leads:

Mrs Woodhead
(Sustainability Lead, AHT and Geography Lead)
Mrs Sheridan
(Sustainability Lead and Head of School)
Mr Walker
(Sustainability Lead and Site Manager)

Our Holgate Sustainability Leads have been working closely with Transform Trust and the Let's Go Zero Team to develop a Climate Action Plan that will reduce the school's Carbon Footprint. Our plan is now in place and developments are underway. Here are some of the things that we have been up to, to promote climate action awareness across our school's community and to reduce our school's carbon footprint:

  • We have signed up to Let's Go Zero Why schools? - Lets Go Zero to look at ways to help Holgate become zero carbon.
  • We are signed up to the Switch Off Fortnight The Pod | Switch Off Fortnight 2025 for the Autumn Term 2025 to raise awareness about energy use across school.
  • We have a new group of Sustainability Champions who have the role of working closely with our sustainability leads to implement changes that will make a real difference to our school's energy consumption and carbon footprint - we will be using Energy Sparks to support and inspire us: Energy Sparks.

Here we are trying to make a difference in the Holgate Community:

Our wonderful children in 3NK have been thinking about care for our environment as a part of their community action. They have designed posters for keeping Hucknall clean and free of waste. The children have shared these with community shops for display in windows.

Selling our preloved school uniforms through the Cress Collective – a sustainable and cost-effective way to shop for school clothing.

We regularly have groups of children litter picking in our community.

Learning about reducing, reusing and recycling as a part of our curriculum learning in Y6 and designing and making recycled material tote bags.

Upcycling pallets to sell at the school fair.

The children in 4ED have collated and decorated envelopes which had seed paper enclosed. They delivered these to houses on Annie’s Close to try to develop the biodiversity of our local area. The hope is that these will be planted and attract pollinators as all the seeds are bee-friendly.
