Big Me Week in...Year 1
We have been holding a Big Me Week this week! Throughout the week, every year group were visited by different professionals who told us all about their jobs!
Rebecca came in to tell us about nursing. She spoke about what different things nurses might do; helping people get better, do immunisations, sew people up, injections, help teach people, give people medicine. We also discussed how ANYONE can be a nurse or a doctor, it doesn't matter if they are a girl or a boy.
Rebecca had also brought in some things for us to have a look at which was really fun, and we got to keep some for our role play area!
Year 1 were very lucky to have Marcus and Mark visit on Monday, who are firefighters from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. They told us what firefighters do in their jobs - stopping fires, helping animals and people trapped high up, helping big animals that might be stuck, and helping people escape vehicles by cutting them out. They even said there is a special fire engine in Nottingham that has a boat on it so that they can do water rescue on lakes and rivers!
We also learnt about fire safety. Children should never play with matches or lighters, and should always tell a grown up if they see some in reach. Grown ups also need to check that they have smoke/fire alarms, and that they should be tested at least every month. Marcus also spoke about it was very important that people should only ring 999 in an emergency as otherwise the fire engine would be in the wrong place.
Marcus had brought in his special fire fighter uniform and Mrs Barnes got to try it on - it was very heavy and hot! They told us that the clothes are made from a special material that resists fire. They also wear a helmet in case things fall on to their heads.
We got to go and visit the fire engine and find out all the different equipment that it carries, like the big metal cutters, the ladders and the hose. They showed us how to use the hose and it squirted really high and fast! We also got to go inside the fire engine and see what was inside.
